Habitat

Primarily inhabits alpine and sub-alpine grasslands, rocky slopes, fynbos, and heathland, typically found between 1,800 and 3,300 meters (5,900-10,800 feet) above sea level. Favors areas with short grass, scattered protea scrub, and rock outcrops.

Diet

Feeds predominantly on small grass seeds and the seeds of various forbs, supplementing its diet with a small number of insects, particularly during the breeding season to feed chicks. Forages mainly by gleaning seeds directly from the ground or from low-growing plants.
