Habitat

This heron primarily inhabits coastal and inland wetlands, including mangrove swamps, estuaries, shallow freshwater lakes, slow-moving rivers, and flooded rice paddies. It generally occurs at low elevations, though it can be found inland up to approximately 1,500 meters.

Diet

The primary diet consists of fish, supplemented by amphibians, crustaceans (especially crabs), and large aquatic insects. It mainly forages by wading in shallow water and ambushing prey with a swift strike of its powerful bill.
